Where does Avocado come from?
Avocado comes from... a long, long time ago. More precisely, to reach the roots of avocado, we have to go back some 7,000 years in time and visit what is now known as Mexico. Avocado origins can be traced back to Mexican tribes of Inca, Olmec and Maya that grew avocado trees.
Europeans had to wait a while for the avocado. A long while, to be precise, as avocado origins in Europe date back to the 16th century. We enjoy this delicious and useful fruit today thanks to the Spanish explorers who brought it to our continent from Central and South America, where, as mentioned above, it was already common for a long, long time.
You would think the name "avocado" is as old as its history. Quite the opposite! Although avocado history dates back to ancient times, the name “avocado” as we know it today was invented quite recently, at the end of the 17th century. It was coined by Sir Hans Sloane, an Irish collector and naturalist, who some also consider the inventor of chocolate milk.
The history of avocado confirms that it is a truly multi-tasking fruit! Avocado is used as an ingredient in cosmetics, hair care products and it enriches our diet – and doing it well. It has lots and lots of fiber in it - more than any other fruit!
