How to use Herbal Essences hair mask?

At Herbal Essences, we have a range of hair masks that will deeply nourish your hair, soften your strands and make your dry or damaged locks manageable. Our hair masks are pH-balanced, colour-safe and certified cruelty free by PETA.

But once you get yourself one of our treatments, you may be asking: “how do you use Herbal Essences hair mask?”

Hair masks are used for both regular conditioning and deep conditioning. There are a few different ways to use Herbal Essences hair masks, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. The main difference in how you use your hair mask will be how much and how long you leave it in.

How to apply Herbal Essences hair masks?

The first step, when planning to use our hair mask, is to shampoo your hair and clean it thoroughly yet gently! For this, we recommend one of one of our shampoos. After this, you’ll apply your hair mask starting with the lengths of your hair (not the roots!), using your fingers first, and then running through it with a comb to make sure you don’t miss any spots. (For curly hair, using a thick toothed comb is best).

Some choose to use conditioner between shampooing and applying their hair mask. Again, this will depend on your hair type - usually, you’d condition in between if your hair is thick, dry and courser. If you have thinner more delicate locks, you can just apply the hair mask after rinsing out your shampoo.

Read the label on your Herbal Essences hair mask to determine if you should apply it to wet hair or towel-dried hair. Some differ, and you’ll get the best results by following the instructions.

  • Step 1: Shampoo and clean your hair thoroughly yet gently!
  • Step 2: Apply your Herbal Essences hair mask, using your fingers starting from your tips
  • Step 3: Run through your hair with a comb, so you don’t miss any spots but avoid your roots
  • Step 4: Enjoy the scent as much as you want while carrying on other activities
  • Step 5: Rinse your hair thoroughly, with cold or lukewarm water

How long do I leave a hair mask on?

For regular conditioning, you can leave the hair mask on for 2 minutes, for more deep conditioning, you can leave it in for up to 10 minutes. The longer you leave it the more you need to ensure you rinse it out thoroughly.

How long you leave your hair mask on will depend on which of our products you choose, your hair type, and how damaged your hair is. Make sure to enjoy the scent, this is not a lecture but a relaxing moment for you and your Hair. Why don’t you try using our Herbal Essences Coconut Milk & Aloe Hydrating Hair Mask for Dry Damaged Hair or our Herbal Essences Coconut Milk Hair Mask?

How often can I use a hair mask?

Your hair condition will have a lot to do with how often you should use a hair mask and how long you’ll keep one in before rinsing

For very damaged and very frizzy hair, it’s often recommended to apply a hair mask once or twice a week. For hair that isn’t so damaged and only slightly frizzy, once every week, to once every two weeks if barely damaged would be sufficient.

When using hair masks, it’s important to remember to rinse thoroughly when the time is up! Read labels to ensure which hair mask fits your hair type.

Adjust the Herbal Essences hair mask to your hair type

Herbal Essences Coconut Milk Hydrating hair mask for frizzy hair

Many hair types struggle with frizz - especially if your hair is wavy, curly or has been dyed. Some hair masks are better for frizz reduction than others, but you can also adjust how you use a hair mask to improve results.

As mentioned before, if you have very frizzy, or damaged hair, it’s usually a good idea to shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse and then put on a hair mask. For curly or very damaged hair, it’s even suggested that you apply your mask while still in the shower, as the steam helps to open up the cuticles of your hair, allowing the nourishments in your hair mask to penetrate more deeply.
